The Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1950 by Louie Faverino, Carl May and Dan Sullivan. In 2004 the total number of incidents in Bloomfield exceeded 1200, quite the contrast to the first year of operation when the firefighters responded to 15 emergency alarms. Since it’s inception the department has grown to be progressive and proactive and currently holds an Insurance Services Office Class 4 fire protection class

Staffing for the department is predominantly volunteer and although this level fluctuates we have a core of professional that make the department successful. In September 2002 the department hired career firefighters to insure adequate staffing during weekdays when the volunteer firefighters are not available. Persons interested in volunteering are urged to contact the department for additional information.

Presently the department operates from two stations, the main station located at 915 North First Street and Station 2 located at 1152 South Church Street. In addition plans are underway to add on and remodel the main station and construct a third sub-station in the north section of the City.

Apparatus operated by the department includes 2 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 heavy rescue truck, 2 tanker trucks, 2 brush trucks, 1 mini-pumper, 2 light rescue trucks, water rescue equipment, a confined space/trench rescue trailer and 1 administrative vehicle.

The type of emergencies the department responds to is as diverse as the men and women who serve the department, these emergencies include structure fires, brush fires, petroleum fires, emergency medical services, water rescue, confined space rescue, high angle rescue, trench rescue, vehicle rescue and hazardous material incidents.

George Duncan serves as the Fire Chief for the department and may be contacted at the above telephone number and e-mail address. For up to date information please visit the Fire Department Bulletin Boards.
